A full article about subtitling and captioning is coming soon, but in the meantime, have a list of resources in English, French and Spanish, along with a link for German-language users of subtitled media. I&#8217;m personally limited to the languages I can read, but if readers have other suggestions I&#8217;d be glad to add them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Irish National Disability Authority&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/universaldesign.ie\/Technology-ICT\/Digital-TV-equipment-and-services\/guidelines-for-digital-tv-equipment-and-services\/Subtitles-for-people-who-are-deaf-or-hard-of-hearing\/\">suggestions for good subtitling, captioning and written descriptions of auditory content<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The US Described and Captioned Media Program&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcmp.org\/captioningkey\/index.Html\">Captioning Key<\/a>, a guide for captioning and subtitling video according to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cab-acr.ca\/english\/social\/captioning\/captioning.pdf\">Canadian Association of Broadcasters&#8217; Closed Captioning Standards and Protocol for Canadian English Television Programming Services<\/a> (PDF document) &#8211; primarily for TV, but some of the suggestions could be used for Canadian content served via online streaming services.<\/li>\n<li>The BBC&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/guidelines\/futuremedia\/accessibility\/subtitling_guides\/online_sub_editorial_guidelines_vs1_1.Pdf\">Online Editorial Subtitling Guidelines<\/a>, which are used for all BBC programmes that stream online.<\/li>\n<li>Mar Gonz\u00e1lez, a Spanish translation and accessibility specialist, has an <a href=\"http:\/\/dichodeotraforma.blogspot.com\/2012\/10\/subtitulado-para-sordos.html\">article explaining many principles of Spanish-language subtitling<\/a> (article is in Spanish) called &#8216;Subtitulado para sordos&#8217; or &#8216;Subtitled for deaf people&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boe.es\/buscar\/act.php?id=BOE-A-2010-5292\"><em>General de la comunicaci\u00f3n audiovisual<\/em><\/a>, the law in Spain governing the use of subtitles\/captioning and other accessibility issues.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medias-soustitres.com\/\">Medias sous-titr\u00e9s<\/a> (Subtitled Media) &#8211; a French-language site with news and articles about subtitled media, including TV programmes and films.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kalyzee.com\/guide-de-transcription-pour-de-bons-sous-titres\/\">Kalyzee&#8217;s guide to creating good subtitles in French<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Martin Dutrait&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sirtin.fr\/2012\/06\/04\/dossier-sous-titrage-preambule\/\">Dossier sous-titrage<\/a>, a guide to French-language subtitling (and subtitling generally, though the site is in French).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gretaundstarks.de\/\">GRETA and STARKS<\/a> &#8211; services for subtitled and audio-described German-language media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is a roundup of some resources for people who create subtitles or captions for online video (or in some cases, links to subtitled and captioned media).
